PGA TOUR REVIEW: Kizzire In Paradise
Just like in cards a pair of nines doesn’t usually win and it was as true at the OHL Classic as it is in the World Series of Poker. While Patton Kizzire dominated, two of our picks fell just short.
Patton Kizzire won for the first time on Tour by holding off Rickie Fowler, who proved a worthy favourite in Mayakoba on Sunday.
We had highlighted the trend of favourites finishing in the Top 5 in the last few weeks and, while Rickie Fowler’s 9/1 odds certainly didn’t look very appealing in this field, he did return in the Top 5 money places.
That makes it 5 out 7 events so far this season where betting on the favourite has paid off:
Safeway Open – Phil Mickelson (16/1) T3
CIMB Classic – Justin Thomas (4/1) T17
CJ Cup – Justin Thomas (6/)1 WIN
WGC-HSBC Champions – Dustin Johnson (17/2) T2
Sanderson Farms – Chesson Hadley (20/1) 2nd
Shriners – Tony Finau (16/1) T16
OHL Classic – Rickie Fowler (9/1) 2nd
2017 OHL Classic Winner’s Report
The thing is Kizzire had been expected to win much sooner after being the Web.com’s leading money winner in 2015. A number of his contemporaries from that group of Web.com graduates had already seized their chance including; Emiliano Grillo, Peter Malnati, Smylie Kaufman and Si-Woo Kim.
This week was Kizzire’s, and he shrugged off a late charge from Fowler to win his first title at attractive odds of 66/1.
The signs were clearly there.
The week before at The Shriners Patton had come up narrowly short and missed the playoff by one at odds of 100/1. This was his fourth start of the season and after missing the cut at the Safeway Open he didn’t feature in the new Asian Swing but did post a strong T10 at the Sanderson Farms before his Top 5 in the Shriners.
“I was gad to get it done, Rickie made me work hard” – Patton Kizzire
Clearly the signs were there.
Not only does this win put Kizzire firmly on an upward career curve, it also puts him into contention for the FedExCup; his three Top 10s have ensured he sits proudly atop the rankings with just one more event to go before the winter break.
2017 OHL Classic Betting Odds – Top 5
Only two of the Top 5 could be considered unusual this week, but the others had already highlighted clear intentions this season. Here’s a look at what you could have won:
1st – [-19] Patton Kizzre 66/1
2nd – [-18] Rickie Fowler 9/1 (fav)
3rd – [-15] Si-woo Kim 150/1

T4- [-14] Martin Pillar 400/1

Rickie Fowler (9/1) opened up his 2018 season with a showing that was wholly unsurprising. In a weak field, he rallied hard at the weekend to prove the only player capable of getting near Kizzire. At no time during the week did he drop out of the Top 5 and this might be a taste of what’s to come this year for, arguable, the best player in the world without major honours.
Si-woo Kim (150/1) is one of those players you know all about, but let him drop off your radar for a second and BANG! he’s back up there again. A huge talent, but he hasn’t exactly impressed so far this season (77-T44-T69). Until this week he hadn’t even broken 70, he did four times in Mayakoba – go figure! Hence the PLAYERS champ trading at well over triple figure odds.
Charles Howell III (50/1) is one of those money making professional golf machines whose talent at doing so I would happily sacrifice my wife and family for. So when a payer like Howell starts to trend hot (T51-T19-T15) you better expect another finish in the money spots.
What do we know about Martin Pillar (400/1)? Well, he’s 5’10”, married to LPGA player Gerina Pillar, hasn’t cracked the Top 40 in three attempts this season and…AND…romped into the Top 5 at 400/1. If anybody, ANYBODY, was on him this week, WTF did you spot, and can I have some?
During the 2015 Web.com season Kizzire was quotes as saying. “Winning the tournament and winning the money title are the two goals that I have this year”. Two years ago, that’s exactly what he did do. Perhaps history will repeat…one step higher.
